FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A statewide rally occurred on Oct. 31, where a group of students, educators and residents from Fairbanks participated in their own branch of the statewide rally right here in the interior.

From 10 a.m. to 10:56 a.m., a small gathering of youth and adults came together at the corner of Geist Road and University Avenue, to rally in support of the students of the Mat-Su Borough School District. The small collective was part of a larger statewide rally all centered around actions in the Mat-Su Borough.

Participants in Fairbanks gathered to show solidarity with the Mat-Su movement, which was rallying against book bans in the Mat-Su Borough School District and the student’s voices they say have been suppressed in that district.

The event was organized on an Instagram account which appears to be run by students in the Mat-Su Valley. According to the account called “AK.walkoutforstudents” the rally was also put on in response to other issues such as student and faculty investigations, increased credit requirements for graduation in the Mat-Su borough and the suppression of student representation in the school board.
