Parks Highway fatal car chase and shooting
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A man was shot and killed by Alaska State Troopers (AST) on Wednesday after a vehicle chase on the Parks Highway that led to a temporary closure of the road.
The closure occurred near Healy, and according to AST, it was due to a public safety risk.
Troopers say the driver, 45-year-old Fairbanks resident Michael Grimes, refused to stop for a marked trooper vehicle, which led troopers to pursue the vehicle.
Troopers say Grimes shot multiple rounds at them, causing them to return fire, and striking Grimes.
Spike strips were used to stop the truck and more shots were exchanged after the truck stopped. Grimes was declared dead at the scene.
A passenger, 42-year-old North Pole resident Melody Perry, was unharmed. She was arrested on charges of weapons misconduct.
Next of kin have been notified.
The officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave.
