Borough residents may notice a different type of aircraft at Eielson Air Force Base. Three B-52 H Stratofortress bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana are conducting operations out of Eielson.

The bombers are deployed to support Pacific Air Forces' training efforts and demonstrate that they can take off from anywhere in the world.

“With our different capabilities and mission sets, we can basically employ any type of mission from close air support to air interjection to maritime support. We really have the whole gambit, so we are very lethal and agile,” said King.

While up in Alaska, the long-range heavy bomber is working with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Japan Air Self Defense Force, as well as the U-S Navy and Air Force personnel.

The last time the B-52s were deployed to Eielson was in 2017 in support of Red Flag-Alaska 17-3.

Major Marisa "Siren" King, director of operations with the 96th Expeditionary Bomber Task Force, says Eielson is the gateway to the pacific allowing them to rapidly deploy Airmen, support allies and be able to strike.

"I know during these tough COVID times, it is essential to note we can still project our capabilities, we can still deter enemy aggression while at the same time just showing support for the PACOM region," said King.

According to Pacific Air Forces Public Affairs, the Bomber Task Force is expected to remain at Eielson for a few weeks. However, exact dates cannot be disclosed due to operational security concerns.
