Many are celebrating the shortest day of the year in the Interior, and the Downtown Association of Fairbanks is inviting residents to enjoy winter solstice with its fireworks event. The Alyeska Pipeline 'Celebration of Lights' fireworks show will launch over the Chena River from Griffin Park Saturday night starting at 8 p.m. Before the show, Arctic Traveler Gift Shop at the corner of 2nd and Cushman will have live music and refreshments. Executive Director of the Downtown Association of Fairbanks, David Van den Berg, says this event is a great way to celebrate brighter days in the Interior.

"The reasons for the fireworks at this time of year, it gives us a little bit of a mental boost. Today is the shortest day of the year and it gets lighter and tomorrow night of course we have the fireworks, so it gives us a bit of a mental boost and downtown is the heart of the community. It's a good time to come together at the holidays. Downtown is open. Like I said, a lot of business are going to be open before and after, so I think it's a good time for families to come downtown and look forward to brighter days,” he said.

Downtown Association of Fairbanks also suggests that the 'William Ransom Wood Centennial Footbridge' and the 'Golden Heart Plaza' would be good viewing points to see the fireworks. The association also recommends the parking garage at 3rd Avenue and Noble Street and Sadler's Home Furnishings lot for parking.
