DOT negotiating chartered vessels for AMHS due to unexpected interruption in service
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT) is currently negotiating with three marine charter companies options for interim passenger and freight service on the Alaska Marine Highway System.
According to a press release issued by DOT on Monday, this is due to an unexpected interruption in service of the M/V Matanuska and Tazlina.
Meadow Bailey, Communications Director with DOT, says that they have had to reach out to these marine charter companies out of necessity, due to a lack of redundancy vessels they would be able to use instead.
She says that DOT will announce when these chartered vessels will be available in order to let residents of affected coastal communities know. This will afford them an opportunity to prepare whatever freight cargo and travel arrangements they need ahead of time.
Bailey says the DOT hopes the chartered vessels will be ready in the coming week.
The M/V Matanuska and Tazlina are expected to be back in operation in early March.
