Death of Fort Wainwright soldier under investigation, second death in 60 days
A USARAK soldier died from a gunshot wound Saturday evening in Fairbanks.
Pfc. Jeremiah Matthew Wombacher was a cavalry scout assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division’s 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment.
This is the second death of a Fort Wainwright soldier in the last 60 days. Following the
in early June 2019.
According to a press release put out by USARAK Wombacher, 22, was from Warrenton, Missouri, joined the Army in March 2018 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, before reporting to Alaska in July 2018. His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
“Jeremiah was an outstanding Soldier and an essential part of this squadron,” said Lt. Col. Aaron Mock, 5-1 Cavalry commander. “This is an extremely sad time for the organization and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends who are struggling with his loss. He will be deeply missed.”
The incident is under investigation by the Fairbanks Police Department and more information will be made available as the investigation develops.
