Dozens of inmates riot at maximum-security prison in Seward
Over 60 inmates barricading a door and rioted in a housing unit at a maximum security prison in Seward Tuesday night.
According to a press release put out by the Alaska Department of Corrections at approximately 9:00PM on May 7th 62 prisoners barricaded the entry to their housing unit in the ‘Hotel Mod’ at Spring Creek Correctional Center and began to riot and destroy property. The facility was then put into lockdown and a count was conducted ascertaining the wellbeing and whereabouts of all prisoners and staff.
Special Operations Response Teams from Kenai and Anchorage were dispatched to the facility to deal with the riot, arriving at approximately 3:00AM, 6 hours after the initial disturbance began. It would be another 3 hours before non-lethal force was used to gain compliance and control in the unit.
No injuries are being reported from either prisoners or staff and medical staff, including nurses, were on hand to assess injuries. Every inmate was cleared by medical and decontaminated.
