FNSB to take part in solar energy challenge
The Fairbanks North Star Borough has partnered with the Fairbanks Climate Action Coalition and Native Movement to compete in the Department of Energy's Solar in Your Community Challenge.
Fairbanks and surrounding areas have already implemented solar energy into businesses, including the North Pole Library. Having these solar panels at the library aids the borough in collecting data on different mounting arrangements of panels.
The Solar Challenge has awarded the borough technical assistance to investigate if this project is able to drive down the cost of solar to the point that it's economically feasible to apply further.
Energy Management Engineer for the borough, Ben Loeffler, says this project could continue the implementation of solar in the interior.
"So the cost of solar has declined significantly even in just the last few years, and it's reaching a point where it's beginning to be economical for certain installations. The borough evaluates for old, new construction and major renovations and if it's economical based on the goods that are received, we move forward," said Loeffler.
