'Fairbanks Community Needs Drive' collecting donations to benefit nonprofits
Helping local donations have an impact, that is the goal of the Fairbanks Community Needs Drive is this weekend.
The AmeriCorps VISTA of Fairbanks, along with the Housing and Homeless Coalition, is organizing the drive this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Love INC's new building at 609 3rd Street. VISTA will be collecting donations and dispersing them to ten different agencies. Ashton Varner, Team Leader for the VISTA, says this drive gives the community an efficient way to make sure the items they donate will be used. She went on to talk about the extensive nature of the donations they are looking for.
"Some of the items are probably what you would expect, clothing, warm boots, things of that nature," began Varner; "but then our local nonprofits have a vast array of programs they work on. For the Sober Living Apartments that are going to be coming up in town, for that it's like cork boards and small trash cans. We got another agency that does outreach at the correctional facility. They do an educational program so they are looking for school supplies, office supplies."
Every item that the drive is collecting has been requested by a different nonprofit. Ashton says this helps them collect items that they know will be an impact. The Agency list both gently used goods, as well as new items they are looking for. Towels and wash clothes that are donated will be going to the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living, while high chairs and diapers will be going to Thrivalaska. Ashton says that if you have something to donate that is not on the list, they may still be able to find an agency that can use it.
