Fairbanks International Airport introduces new cell phone lot for drivers waiting to pick up passengers
Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) has opened a cell phone lot where drivers can wait for arriving passengers.
“The cell phone lot is a convenient and free option for folks to wait as their passengers arrive,” explains Matt McClurg, Chief of Airport Operations at Fairbanks International Airport. “Our main goal for opening that up was to reduce a layer of congestion up on the concourse.”
McClurg mentions that although FAI does offer free 30 minute parking, the difference with a cell phone lot is that they are designed to allow drivers to wait inside their vehicles without having to worry about accruing parking fees.
According to a press release, the cell phone lot is designed only for private vehicles. McClurg explains that commercial vehicles have their own designated waiting areas. “[Taxi lanes are] reserved just for taxis,” he says, referring to a section of the airport concourse. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are currently designated a waiting area between the two ponds facing the terminal.
According to McClurg, however, FAI is looking at another area for rideshare services to wait. “We’re looking at options to make a different position for them to be ready to pick up a passenger later in the summer,” reveals McClurg. “As that industry grows, we’ll have a little more room for them.”
The cell phone lot, located across from the Everts Air Fuel Operations building, is accessible from the airport concourse or via Old Airport Rd..
