Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor announces cancer diagnosis
Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Bryce J. Ward has issued the following statement regarding his health:
“In December 2019, I went to the doctor’s office to get a bump on my chest examined; much to my surprise, it came back looking like a type of cancer known as lymphoma. It took some time to diagnose exactly what type and my progression, however last week we received the official classification as a subtype of a B-Cell Lymphoma. Last Friday, I started chemotherapy treatment at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Over the next few months as I continue with treatment, I will not be traveling and will be taking intermittent time off to recover from the treatments. My office hours will be flexible, and I ask for your patience as I take some extra time to get well.
I have full confidence in the leadership team here at the Borough and that normal operations will continue. The borough team is strong, and we have good communications plans in place during my absences so that borough business is carried out.
When you are faced with a struggle that affects your health, it provides an opportunity to rediscover what is most important. For me, it is my family, my friends, and serving my community. As I go forward in this journey, I will keep you updated on my progress. I encourage you to seek out medical help if something does not feel right. It is important to listen to your body.
"Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. With the faith, love and support of my family, I remain optimistic even in the face of this medical challenge. I give thanks daily for the many blessings I have, and for the privilege to serve this amazing community.”
