THE HOTTER DAYS THIS PAST WEEK BROUGHT OUT LARGE NUMBERS OF WASPS AND HORNETS.

TONIGHT IN OUR GARDENING TIPS, WE'LL SHOW YOU A FEW WAYS TO RID YOURSELF OF THESE DANGEROUS PESTS.

PESKY YELLOW JACKETS, THERE SURE ARE A LOT OF THEM THIS YEAR.

HI! I'M JULIE RILEY WITH COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE, AND I DON'T WANT YOU TO GET STUNG WHILE OUT WORKING IN THE YARD THIS MONTH.

SO THE YELLOW JACKETS WE THINK OF THEM AS MAKING NESTS UP IN THE EAVES, BUT THEY CAN MAKE THOSE SAME PAPER NESTS ON THE GROUND.

SO THE INSECTS ARE BENEFICIAL, THEY EAT APHIDS AND CATERPILLARS, BUT THEY ALSO LOVE SALMON.

SO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRAP THEM, YOU CAN USE THAT TO YOUR ADVANTAGE BY MAKING A HOMEMADE TRAP.

YOU JUST DANGLE THE PIECE OF FISH OVER SOME SOAPY WATER, AND AS THEY COME TO FEED, THEY EAT A LOT, THEY FALL IN, AND DROWN.

IF YOUR NOT UP TO DOING IT YOURSELF, YOU CAN PURCHASE TRAPS AT LOCAL GREENHOUSES THAT YOU CAN HANG AND THEY USE LURES AND ATTRACTANTS TO BRING THE YELLOW JACKETS IN.

WE'VE GOT OVER 11 SPECIES OF YELLOW JACKETS IN ALASKA AND AS I SAID THEY HELP TP KEEP THE APHID POPULATION DOWN.

BE CAREFUL YOU DON'T GET STUNG. AND IF YOU GO AFTER THAT NEST DO IT WHEN THE INSECTS ARE LESS ACTIVE IN THE EVENING.

BUNDLE UP, TRY NNOT HAVE MUCH OF YOUR SKIN EXPOSED IF YOUR GOING TO SPRAY THEM OR KNOCK THEM DOWN.

SO JOIN ME NEXT WEEK WHEN WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT HASKAP OR HONEY BERRYS.
