AS THE SUMMER WINDS DOWN, IT'S NOW TIME TO TURN OUR ATTENTION TO SPICES AND HERBS THAT ARE BEING COLLECTED.

TONIGHT IN GARDENING TIPS, WE SHOW YOU HOW TO KEEP YOUR HERBS AND SPICES FRESH.

IT'S TIME TO BRING IN THE HARVEST AND I DIDN'T WANT YOU TO FORGET YOUR HERBS.

I'M JULIE RILEY WITH THE UAF COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE, AND I WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRESERVE YOUR HERBS.

NOW EVERYTHING IS GOING TO AIR DRY LIKE THIS LEMON VERBINA.

PARSLEY IF YOU HANG IT TO DRY, IS GOING TO END UP LOOKING LIKE THIS.

VERY UNAPPETISING.

SO I LIKE TO DRY PARSLEY IN THE MICROWAVE.

AND TO DO THAT YOU JUST GET A PIECE OF PAPER TOWEL AND YOU AND TAKE LITTLE SEGMENTS OF YOUR PARSLEY AND PUT IT ON THE PAPER TOWEL AND COVER IT UP, AND THEN MICROWAVE IN SHORT SEGEMENTS.

AND YOU GET IT TO THE POINT WHERE ITS JUST ABOUT DRY AND THEN YOU TAKE IT OUT AND LEAVE IT ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER OVERNIGHT AND YOU'LL HAVE A NICE GREEN BUNCH.

SOME HERBS JUST HAVE TO BE EATEN FRESH, LIKE EDIBLE FLOWERS. THIS IS A SIGNET MARIGOLD OR JOHNNY JUMPS - UPS.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO HANG HERBS, MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME A LITTLE TRICK WHERE YOU TAKE A RUBBER BAND, PUT IT AROUND YOUR LITTLE BUNCH OF HERBS, AND THEN YOU JUST FLIP IT AROUND THE BOTTOM OF A HANGER AND THAT WAY AS THE STEMS SHRINK AND THE RUBBER BAND SHRINKS, THEY DON'T FALL OFF.

SO LEMON VERBNINA DRIES WELL AND SAGE ALONG WITH THYMES AND OREGANO.

SO DON'T LET YOUR HERBS GO TO WASTE BRING THEM IN AND PROTECT THEM FROM FROST.

SO NEXT WEEK WE'LL BE COMING INDOORS TOO WITH WORMS

AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO GET SET UP FOR WORM COMPOSTING.

GARDENING TIPS IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY MIDNIGHT SUN FAMILY MEDICINE, A PROUD PARTNER OF "MOMS EVERYDAY".
