This Saturday, October 26, is the National Day of the Deployed, so USO Fort Wainwright is working with community members to send care packages to Fort Wainwright soldiers who are currently deployed to the Middle East.

Angie Poole, USO Alaska Interior Center Operations and Program Manager, said since this is the first deployment in close to a decade, it is their first time doing care packages. They have been collecting donations, and on Saturday, volunteers and community members will be packing boxes with the donated items to send to soldiers.

Poole says Alaska Communications Services is paying all of the shipping to send the boxes overseas to the soldiers and the number of boxes they are able to send out will depend on donations but that they are aiming for around 200-300 boxes. Some of the boxes will be sent to commanders to be dispersed while some will go to specific soldiers who there have been requests to have that soldier receive one. Poole says if you have a soldier who you would like a box sent to, to reach out to them.

Poole says these boxes are something they can do to brighten the soldier’s day, “it is our privilege to serve them, and be the force behind the force.”

“Not only do these care packages give them a sense of home, it makes a dreary day turn into like the best day ever when they receive that package in the mail.”

Poole says they are accepting donations up until Saturday when they assemble the boxes. The list of items USO Fort Wainwright said they are accepting are:
