Military Report: Students learn about opportunities at service academies
Congressman Don Young's office held an 'Alaska Service Academies Night' at Lathrop High School on Monday night to inform students how to be nominated and apply to service academies. Students had the opportunity to talk to representatives from the academies as well as the congressional offices involved in the nomination process.
"In order for an applicant to get accepted into a service academy, they have to receive a nomination from either their congressman, the senators, vice president or presidential nomination," said Tara Risinger, Special Assistant to Congressman Don Young.
Captain Kenny Pyles with West Point Academy said with most of the service academies on the east coast, some students in Alaska, may not know much about them.
"One of the things we notice too is some candidates don't even realize West Point or any service academy is an opportunity, they also don't realize what the requirements are, that are necessary to get into the service academies," said Pyles.
Representative for the U.S. Naval Academy, Lieutenant Erin Sleister says she travels around the country to put a face to the person who will be reading candidate applications and mentoring students. "It's also important because the service academies represent the entire United States, so it's really important that we even do our outreach in Alaska, and get the students we need from the entire United States," said Sleister.
Lieutenant Colonel Lyle Langston representing the U.S. Air Force Academy says since he is local at Eielson, he has more of a chance to interact with the local community.
"Maybe they've never met someone from the Air Force Academy before, but they get on the spot educational counseling, straight from the air force as far as what's required, from the school counselors they may not get the full picture, but with us we bring materials we bring handouts, they can take home with them, so they have a pretty good idea of what to expect," said Langston.
