PET OF THE WEEK: Let Pancake the guinea pig butter you up
No one 'stacks' up to this little pig! Visit the Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter and let him butter you up. Meet Pancake in this edition of 'Pet of the Week.'
Here's what Sarah Harman, animal tender with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say:
"Hi my name is Sarah, I am here at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter with our 'Pet of the Week.' This is Pancake; he is a two-year-old male guinea pig.
So far, he is pretty shy but he is very friendly. He could use a calm quiet household that's patient and willing to work with him a little bit and help him gain some confidence in being handled. He is quite nice; he is just a little shy and uncertain.
Guinea pigs are cool pets. They require lots of fresh greens and vegetables. They also enjoy oranges and other fruits. It helps them get the high amount of Vitamin C they need every day. Guinea pigs also need access to Timothy hay at all times. That chewing helps keep their front teeth down or else they will continue to grow and get uncomfortable. Chewing on the hay helps keep their teeth healthy. They also need just a little bit of pellets everyday as well. Too many pellets and they will get a little overweight but they are a nice treat to have to supplement their diets.
Guinea Pigs do well, they a very social creatures, they like to have a friend. Pancake does not currently have a friend, so if you have a lonely male guinea pig who could use a buddy, Pancake would love to come and join your home.
If guinea pigs are not your style, we have lots of dogs, several cats, as well as some bunnies and some fish available for adoption. Some come on down and meet your new friend."
