Results of the 2020 Alaska Democratic Primary

The results are in for the Alaska Democratic Primary.

Over 19,700 ballots were tabulated by the Alaska Democratic Party, the results of which saw 55.3% of votes going towards Vice President Joe Biden, garnering him 9 delegates. Senator Bernie Sanders accrued 44.7% of votes, which netted him 8 delegates.

According to the Alaska Democratic Party, the number of voters who participated this year was almost twice the number which voted in the 2016 caucuses around Alaska.

In early March, the party mailed 71,106 ranked choice ballots to registered Democrats around the state. Due to the novel coronavirus, the party’s Executive Committee unanimously approved an expanded vote-by-mail program. Ballots were due on April 10.

For registered Democrats who did not receive a ballot, or for new voters and voters wishing to change their party affiliation in order to participate, a downloadable ballot was provided on the website between March 23 and April 10.

In accordance with rules set for the 2020 Democratic National Convention, the Alaska Democratic Party was allocated 15 Delegates and 2 Alternates.

On April 18, the 2020 House District Caucus will elect House District Officers and Delegates to the State Convention. The state convention will be held on May 16, and the Democratic National Convention will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin between August 17-30.
