Fairbanks School District Superintendent presents Phase one of school reopening plan
On July 1st, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Superintendent Karen Gaborik held a webinar in which she presented phase one of the district’s Smart Start plan to safely reopen schools in August.
During the presentation, Gaborik described aspects of the school year which the district intends to adjust.
Under the plan, elementary, middle and high school students may be scheduled for 5-hour days, with elementary students attending class 5 days a week, and middle and high school students attending class 2-3 days a week.
According to the presentation, different learning models are being prepared depending on a parent’s comfort level with their child attending school in person, with remote learning options available.
According to Gaborik, with exceptions, face masks may be required of staff and students. "We're going to use our medical partners to help us develop guidelines for masks that in general, for most of us who work in the school system, for kids, for parents, for guardians, for families, most of us need to be prepared to wear masks next year,” she said.
Gaborik emphasized that the plans being made for next year may need to be adjusted as circumstances regarding COVID-19 change.
