Science scholarship aids young women in Alaska

Young women studying the sciences in Alaska have the opportunity to receive a $5,000 dollar scholarship to help aid their education.

The Kathryn E. and John P. Doyle Scholarship is open to both undergrad and graduate female students enrolled at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The late John Doyle started the scholarship in memory of his wife Kathryn, over 10 years ago. Doyle was a faculty member at UAF's marine advisory program and was a fishery scientist.

Paula Cullenberg is on the scholarship review committee and knew Doyle well, “He was a great proponent of women studying science and women moving forward in academics and when Kay passed away he put together this scholarship fund and designated it to support women in our state studying science at one of the University of Alaska branches across the state,” she said.

The son of John and Kathryn, Doug Doyle is also on the scholarship review committee.

“Funding is always critical to get an education,” he said.

Doyle said that this year the committee is looking to award four students, two students in undergrad and two graduate students.

The Alaska Community Foundation manages the scholarship.
