Two Alaska skiers killed in avalanche in Haines Pass
The Haines Volunteer Fire Department says that two skiers died in an avalanche on the Canadian side of Haines Pass in Southeast Alaska.
According to a release from the department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received an SOS signal from an emergency locator at around 1:30 p.m. on Monday about six miles west of the Three Guardsmen mountain in Haines Pass.
Canadian authorities mobilized the Haines Junction Search and Rescue team, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and a helicopter, but arrived on the scene to find that only one of the three skiers were alive.
The Haines Volunteer Fire Department says that arrangements are being made to transport the deceased back to their homes. Haines Borough City Manager Debra Schnabel said that the two dead were Zane Durr and Matthew Green, both 21.
