The Valdez Halibut Derby saw a dramatic increase in boats on Sunday with members of the military stopping by for a visit.

The boats that carried the anglers didn't make any profit, but chose to donate their time in honor of Military Appreciation Day.

This was made possible by the City of Valdez, which puts together a program where charters donate their time, and Crowley Fuel donates fuel, so first and second year military service members can enjoy a day of Halibut fishing.

The talk of the day Friday was Robert Calton of Eielson, who hooked a halibut weighing in at 94.8 pounds.

Calton was aboard the Dan Orion and is currently in the lead of the Halibut Derby.

Trailing close behind Calton is Chris Forman of Joint Base Elmendorf- Richardson, or J-BEAR, with a halibut of 92.2 pounds, which has earned him second place overall.

Finally in third place, with a halibut weighing 88.4 pounds, is Shane Hofstad also of J-BEAR.
