Wood stove registration begins, are you affected?

Starting January 8, 2020, in certain situations residents will have to register their wood stoves with the state of Alaska. For those who already have a wood stove, it is voluntary.

According to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, registration of a wood stove is required when:

-Upon the sale or conveyance of a device

-Before closing, if the device is being sold, leased, or conveyed as part of an existing building or other property

-To participate in the Burn Right Program

-To participate in a wood stove change-out or conversion program

-Before closeout of any compliance or enforcement action

Steven Hoke with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation says it helps them with further projections and help improve air quality.

"We're working towards cleaner air, the overall goal is to work towards cleaner air, not to track who has what wood stove. If we can figure out how many are out there, and where they're at, geographically, less to do with address but geographically; we can start to work towards having that cleaner air, cleaning up, and working towards that EPA standard," said Hoke.
