Alaskans can nominate Purple Heart recipients for 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project. Alaskans who are Purple Heart recipients are eligible for the all-expense paid trip to New York, which will happen in April of 2021.
Participants stay at U.S. Military Academy West Point, and travel to the national Purple Heart Hall of Honor museum, as well as other historic sites.
The annual trip is postponed until next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Russ Vernon, executive director of the National Purple Heart Mission, says they are asking for nominations to represent every state. "We want children, brothers, sisters, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, colleagues to tell the story of not only those that sacrificed and were awarded the purple heart, but what these great Americans are doing now. Many of them continue to serve their communities in amazing ways, continuing their lifetime of service," said Vernon.
Last year, Brad Bunnell of Fairbanks, went on the 2019 Purple Heart Patriot Project. We interviewed Bunnell in September of 2019 after the trip, and he said it was a phenomenal experience.
