The City of Fairbanks has issued a statement advising residents not to go into the Chena River until the water level goes down.

They note that early Friday afternoon, Fairbanks Fire Department responded to 2 overturned kayaks in the river where one adult and 2 children, ages 1 and 11, ended up in the water. Another kayaker was able to help them out of the water, and they were checked out by FFD EMS.

Due to debris, water level, and speed of current, the City advises that the waters can be deadly even with a lifejacket and are still at temperatures which can cause hypothermia.

This news comes after two major incidents of missing persons on the river, one of which resulted in a confirmed death, and the other still missing.
