Suspect in stolen front loader attempted to steal ATM in Fairbanks
There was an attempted break-in at a MAC Federal Credit Union ATM early Saturday around 3 a.m.
According to Angela Head, president and CEO of Mac Federal Credit Union, someone stole a front loader, and then tried to steal the Credit Union's ATM at the Geist Road Location.
Alaska state troopers were contacted and arrived on scene with MAC representatives.
The suspect was not able to get the ATM or any money, but destroyed the building.
According to Head, the troopers found the front loader abandoned at the Ester transfer site shortly after the incident.
The case has been turned over to the FBI, and there are currently no suspects.
The ATM has cameras, but Head says the suspect cut the power at the pole before they dozed over the A-T-M with the front loader, so MAC was not able to get pictures of anyone involved.
Head said this is a reminder to be careful.
"This was one of the first times anything like this has happened... a strange sign of the times, the chaos, the uncertainty that people are feeling... and [we] just to remind folks out there to be really careful, that there's some desperate folks out there as well as criminals, and just to be hyper-aware of that," Head said.
Head says they have nine other locations, so they have not yet decided if they will replace this ATM.
