A future Alaska Nanook was honored with one of the most sought after awards in high school sports.

Senior Destiny Reimers, of Anchorage Christian School, was named Alaska Girls Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year last week.

Reimers, a three-time 3A State Champion with the Lions, signed her National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in November, prior to her senior season.

"She has this fire in her, a work ethic and a desire to be great," UAF Women's head coach Kerri Nakamoto said of her recruit. "She works her tail off all the time, on both ends of the floor, so I think that was the thing that really set her apart from the typical player, she really has that drive." Nakamoto added.

The 5-foot 9-inch guard averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.8 assist and 2.9 steals per game in her final campaign. Reimers has consistently been one of the best players on the best 3A girls team in state, as ACS has captured the last three state titles, with Reimers earning all-tournament honors each year. Reimers, and the Lions, were on their way to a four-peat before their season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. In her final game at ACS, Reimers scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lions to a Southcentral Conference title.

The Nanooks have made a point to keep some of the best prep athletes within the state for college basketball. UAF had seven Alaskans on their 2019-20 roster, including three freshmen in Caitlin Pusich (Juneau), Alanna Conwell (Kotzebue) and Olivia Kraska (Fairbanks).

"We are doing a really good job of keeping a lot of talented Alaska players in state, so we want to continue to do that and make this a place where local and state players are proud to be, and help us make it to the top of the GNAC (Great Northwest Athletic Conference)." Nakamoto said, who just completed her second year at the helm.

Dimond (Anchorage) High Schoo's Isaiah Moses was awarded the Alaska Boys Gatorade Player of the Year.
