Fairbanks anglers reel in week's biggest fish at Valdez Fish Derbies
The Valdez Fishing Derbies have announced their weekly winners in the Halibut Derby for July 17th to the 23rd.
Once again, a Fairbanks Angler is at the top of this week's leaderboard.
Trent Gustafson from right here in Fairbanks pulled in the biggest Halibut of the week with the 152 pounder he caught on July 17th.
The 17th turned out to be a lucky day on the water as Angel Seafler from Eagle River reeled in a 141 pounder to take second place for the week.
The overall leaders remain unchanged for another week as Fairbanks' Tim Stadtmiller is still on top of the leaderboard with a 266 pound monster that he pulled in on June 19th.
Daniel Schmitz is in second place with a 176.6 pounder, barely edging out Hali Lombardi and her 176.4 pounder.
The Halibut Derby awards a 15,000 dollar grand prize for the largest fish, 5,000 dollars for second place, and 2,000 dollars for third.
The Silver Salmon Derby Started over the weekend and gave us our first pack of overall leaders.
Weston Branshaw from Valdez is the top dog in the Silver Derby with a 12.42 pounder.
Kim Keller's 12.04 pounder is holding down second place, and Scott
Hicks is in third place with an 11.4 pound Salmon.
All were caught on July 22nd.
The Silver Salmon Derby awards the same prizes as the Halibut Derby with a $15,000 prize for first place, $5,000 for second and $2,000 for third place.
However, every single angler who buys a derby ticket will have a chance to win 10,000 dollars in a drawing at the end of the season.
The Kid's Pink Salmon Derby also took place down in Valdez on
Saturday and Fairbanks' own Alex Plowman not only took first place in his 8-10 age group, he set a new record with his 10.12 pound Pink Salmon.
It is the biggest Pink ever caught in the kids salmon Derby which dates back to 2008. The previous record was 8.08 pounds.
