Limited North American Championships concluded over the weekend

The Limited North American Championships concluded over the weekend as numerous teams took on the trails outside the Mushers Hall despite concerns over the coronavirus.

The three day championships featured four events, with 4-dog, 6-dog, 8-dog and Skijorning races taking place. Pam Schamber was the most sucessful individual musher on the weekend, taking the crown in skijorning, where the person is pulled by dogs while on skis and the 4-dog race, where she actually used only three dogs, with a 40 second advantage in skijorning and winning the 4-dog by nearly 2 minutes.

Taking the 6-dog event, Kim Wells, using 5 dogs to finish the eight mile sprints in a total time of 64 minutes and 42 seconds. Taking the 12 and a half mile 8-dog championship, Dawn Brown with 6 dogs, winning the race by 35 seconds.

The races were able still compete despite numerous events across the state being cancelled and postponed due to the coronavirus.

"The preparations and precautions that we've been having the last week as a board and as race officials, is knowing the extent of what's going on around the world, not only here in Alaska,” said Alaska Dog Mushers Association Vice President Don Standing Bear. “There are so many places where people can go and watch our race, but here at the hall, we would like people to stay away from the hall and congregate."

In regards to the Open North American Championships, the ADMA released a press release that the race will be starting on March 20 and that the Mushers Hall will be closed to the public.

“As of March 16, the Alaska Dog Mushers Association will host the Open North American Championship at the Jeff Studdert Race Grounds March 20-22 at 1pm,” from ADMA’s press release on Facebook. “The facilities will be closed to the public. No spectators will be allowed on the property. All events peripheral to the race will be cancelled. These events include the Hampton Inn & Suites Mushers Draw, Calcutta, Doyon Limited Vendor Tent, Raffle, Parka Parade, Pop Scramble and Finish Banquet.”

The races are set to start on Friday March 20 at the Mushers Hall.
