The Fairbanks Motorcycle Racing Lions were one of the first organizations to bring sports back to Fairbanks amidst the COVID-19 pandemic when they held their first city race on May 10.

Fast forward to Independence Day weekend and they are halfway through their state races after a successful two-day meet July 4-5.

"The turnout was great, we had 150ish riders out here," said President of the Fairbanks Motorcycle Racing Lions Craig Hill." This was really nice, because at the beginning of the year, with all of the COVID mandates and stuff, we weren't sure if we were going to be able to ride."

Hundreds of competitors and many more spectators trekked to the Polar Roller Raceway in North Pole for second of four state meets. With racers from all over the state, many are unfamiliar with each other, but that doesn't prevent them from helping on another.

"I don't know a lot of the people here, but everyone is willing to help everybody out," said Expert Rider Steven Pillans. "I got a flat tire earier today and people just help you out, however. It is a family, it is a good sport."

Motocross is reserved for the fearless and many riders first get on the bike at a young age, including Jordan Hill, whose father introduced her to the sport at the age of three or four.

"When we first started there was training wheels on it and we were just in our backyard and then we did like two laps and then he took the training wheels off." said Hill, who is now 12-years old and competes in the women's class.
